For infants., it is important for them to be exposed to sensory at such an early stage in their development. By simply having them play with sponges and water, they are learning about the properties of water, the concept of absorption, and sensory stimulation (water, texture of the sponges). It is also an opportunity for them to develop their cognitive skills and early S.T.E.M. which is Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math!
